Wanke gathers some fine Yorba Linda folk  BY ANN-MARGRET BELLAVOINE FOR THE YORBA LINDA STAR
Glenn P. Wanke’s annual holiday offering at the Yorba Linda Public Library Dec. 18 gathered young and old, with four generations of his own family, to listen to a potpourri of seasonal fare.
Wanke directs two groups, with Main Street Voices the holiday caroling moniker for the larger Pacific Jazz Choir, with a big band jazz and ballad repertory, and Vocal Magic, a more intimate, close harmony jazzy group adopting a Dickensian style for the season.
About 20 singers entertained a family crowd with everything vocal from traditional favorites to upbeat modern syncopated tunes, including the Danish song “Good Morrow” and Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird.” Carols included “Seasonal Madrigal,” “Bring a Torch Jeanette,” “Isabella” and “Gesu Bambino.”
Local fingerstyle guitarist Terry Eakin performed his own repertoire as well as James Taylor and holiday tunes, while Ronda Rubio accompanied the vocal groups on the piano.
Mischievous elves, who seemed to know Wanke very well, ran amok and attempted to sabotage the show with their delivery of “glow in the dark” fruitcake and a hilarious list of the top 10 toys not to get from Santa.
Company member Tracy Pinkerton and her husband Troy are leaving for Texas soon, and performed farewell numbers. Her rich silky voice will be missed.
New members joined the group for this holiday season, and Wanke continues to actively recruit for these great choirs which meet locally.
The finale was an audience singalong of the best carols.

From Gabriella:  (2005)

I didn't know what to expect when we requested a reservation and were confirmed for the Manhattan Transfer clinic. I thought it would be a typical taping session at a Burbank Studio with long lines and huge audience.  Was I ever surprised!  There were only a few rows of  people in the studio, very intimate.  Alan Paul came on stage and said it was like being in someone's living room!   We sat in the 2nd row, center- up close & personal (but there wasn't a bad seat in the house).

It felt surreal to me- there sat Janice Siegel (alto), Alan Paul (tenor), Cheryl Bentyne (soprano), and Tim Hauser (bass), true legends with a career spanning over three decades.  They talked about themselves, the group's history, their music, their inspiration and took questions from the audience.  Of course, we were treated to several of their songs interspersed throughout the evening!  What incredible talent!

I first discovered the M.T. back in the early 80's when I started singing in Glenn's group ("Village Singers").   We performed their arrangements of Java Jive, & Operator, and around that time went to see them in concert at the Greek Theater.  I was hooked and have been listening to their music ever since (as well as learning some arrangements with Vocal Magic).

One of the highlights of the studio session was the opportunity to chat with them after the filming.  The crew brought in humongous pizzas, so we ate while we casually visited with them.  I had a zillion more questions for Cheryl, and she was very  gracious to respond to all of them!   I had seen her perform many times (from afar), and while on stage she has a spontaneous, dazzling presence- a lady with lots of attitude.  In person, she is so endearing and approachable!   Janice is a kick, too- she, Tracy & Amber were chanting "altos rule"!  I wonder if they got that on tape???

Glenn, Willem & Gary mostly hung around talking to Tim & Alan, also asking them questions.  Finally, as people finished their pizza and trickled out of the room there was only the Vocal Magic members and Tim left.  He enthralled us with his stories and experiences from the past, and was so interesting to listen to. We were all reluctant to leave, but the crew was tearing down around us so we had to go!

I'm looking forward to the M.T. new C.D. and seeing them in concert again.  It won't be the same as standing next to them & talking face to face, but now I feel I got to know them as individuals,  as well as the legendary group that they are.  And the memories of this December evening will stay with me forever.
